Understanding YouTube's Topic Channels: A Guide for Artists

On YouTube, a topic channel is automatically created by YouTube whenever it receives music for an artist from a distribution platform like eMastered. Each artist distributing music through a service like this will have their own topic channel, which operates independently of any other YouTube channels that artist might have.

You might think that eMastered itself created the topic channel, but that's not true. YouTube creates and manages these channels to organize and distribute the music across both YouTube and YouTube Music.

These topic channels help make your music accessible on YouTube Music, YouTube’s streaming platform. If you want your music to appear on both the topic channel and your personal artist channel, you’ll need to upgrade your personal channel (also called an Owned and Operated Channel) to what’s called an Official Artist Channel (OAC).

How to Add an Existing Topic Channel to the Upload Form

If you already have a YouTube Music artist profile, enter your artist’s YouTube URL into the corresponding field in the YouTube Music section when uploading music. If you don’t yet have a profile on YouTube Music, choose the option that says “No - [Artist Name] doesn't yet have an artist profile in YouTube Music,” and eMastered will initiate the creation of one for you.

What to Do If Your Music Ends Up on the Wrong Artist Page

In cases where your music is mistakenly added to the wrong artist page on YouTube, you can email help@emastered.com to request that specific releases be moved to the correct artist page or to create a new one altogether.

Can You Delete a Topic Channel?

Since topic channels are managed directly by YouTube, eMastered is unable to delete them. If you don’t want your music showing up in a topic channel or on YouTube Music at all, you can ask to have your music taken down from YouTube Music.

To do this, contact eMastered support and request the removal. Once processed, your music will no longer appear on any topic channel or on the YouTube Music service.

Alternatively, if you maintain your own YouTube channel for your music, you can request to convert it into an Official Artist Channel. This will combine your topic channel with your personal channel, and any music delivered via eMastered will be shown there.
