Why Do I Need a Cover License?
Under U.S. copyright law, releasing a cover song requires a mechanical license, which ensures royalties are paid to the original songwriter. Without this license, your release may be taken down or withheld from distribution.
How to Upload a Cover Song on eMastered
When uploading your track, select:
“Another artist wrote it (it's a cover song)”
You’ll then be prompted to provide the following:
- Original Artist Name (correctly spelled)
- Original Song Title
- Proof of Rights (Mechanical License)
- Upload a valid license from providers such as Songfile or Easy Song
- Link to the Original Song
- Include a Spotify or Apple Music URL to the original version
You must also confirm that you hold all necessary rights before submitting your release.
Important Requirements
- You must obtain your own mechanical license before distribution
- eMastered will not distribute your cover without valid proof of rights
- The license you upload must match the song and release you are submitting
Cover Song Rules
To be eligible for distribution:
- The song must be reproduced faithfully
- No changes to lyrics or melody
- No samples, mashups, or remixes of existing recordings
- You must only use your own original recording of the song
Territory Restrictions
Due to licensing limitations, cover songs cannot be distributed in certain countries, including:
- Brazil
- India
- Mexico
- Pakistan
Your release will be excluded from these regions where required.
Additional Notes
- If you release the same cover song multiple times (e.g., different versions or releases), you must secure a license for each release
- Your license is your responsibility—failure to provide valid documentation may result in takedowns or withheld distribution
